Pre-apprenticeships are focused on preparing students for a successful experience in a Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP). - Drive, maneuver and control heavy machinery (road rollers and crane oilers) used to construct roads, bridges and other structures
- Read grade stakes and adjust and transfer elevations
- Conduct routine inspections and maintain accurate reporting

Most Asphalt Paving, Pre-Apprentice graduates go on to work for construction contractors as front-end loaders, motor grader operators, paving machine operators, load operators, floating load operators or heavy equipment operators. Working hours vary. Most work normal day shifts, but night shifts and weekends also can be a part of the job. Asphalt pavers may work long hours outdoors, depending on the project.

The Advanced Asphalt Paving, Pre-Apprentice program, which is operated by our national training contractor International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), offers industry credentials and certifications to students who complete the program. Students should also earn a state-issued learner’s permit and driver’s license upon completion of the program.
What you’ll need to start training ...
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent (can be earned at all Job Corps centers)
- Completion of a Job Corps basic training program
- Meet academic (math and reading) requirements
- At least 17 years old
- Positive attendance and progress record
- Written recommendation from Job Corps center personnel
- Health clearance at current center
- Strong work ethic and determination to succeed
