Water and wastewater treatment plants and system operators manage a system of machines, often through the use of control boards, to transfer or treat water or wastewater.

Students in are trained in the following subject areas:

  • Using devices and equipment to condition, purify, or refine water for people to drink
  • Maintaining pipeline or conduits, pumping stations, and force mains, and all other related construction devices and appliances for conducting wastewater to a treatment system
  • Operating devices and equipment used to treat, neutralize, stabilize, or dispose of wastewater
  • Operating post-treatment storage facilities, conduits, mains, lines, pumping stations, or other devices used to carry water to the consumer after it has been treated

Career Options

Most Wastewater Operator graduates work for municipal governments. However, some go on to work for state or federal agencies, private water treatment plants, or military installations. Working hours for wastewater operators vary. Most work normal day shifts, but night shifts and weekends also can be a part of the job.


Before entering the program, students must:

  • Complete the core curriculum with passing scores on all written and performance tests.
  • Have strong math and reading skills.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Have a clean criminal record.
