Collision Repair and Refinish



Repair damaged auto bodies and body parts, straighten bent or twisted frames, and work in adverse noisy and dirty environments.

Career Details


Students in are trained in the following subject areas:

  • Repairing and refinishing automotive vehicle bodies and straightening vehicle frames
  • Replacing or repairing broken windshields and window glass
  • Reviewing damage reports, preparing or reviewing repair cost estimates, and planning work to be performed
  • Sanding body areas to be painted and covering bumpers, windows, and trim with masking tape or paper to protect them from the paint
  • Following supervisors’ instructions, such as which parts to restore or replace and how much time the job should take

Career Options

Most Collision Repair and Refinish graduates go to work for body shops, including independently owned body shops and those found in car dealerships. Collision repair and refinish technicians spend most of the day on their feet in shops that are well-ventilated to disperse dust and paint fumes. They sometimes work in confined spaces, and their labor can be physically demanding. Although most technicians work full time, many work overtime and weekend hours.


Before entering the program, students must:

  • Complete the core curriculum with passing scores on all written and performance tests.
  • Meet basic academic requirements in math and reading.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
