Responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining pipes and other plumbing fixtures used in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

Career Details


Students in are trained in the following subject areas:

  • Job safety
  • Sanitary systems and drain-cleaning
  • Roto-Rooter drain-cleaning machines
  • Cables, heads, connectors, and fixtures
  • Sewer and drain diagnoses
  • Customer care
  • Plumbing math, basic electricity, and tools
  • Piping materials and fittings (copper, cast iron, steel)
  • Drain, waste, and vent (DWV) systems and water-distribution systems
  • Sizing, installing, servicing, and testing water-supply piping
  • Water heaters
  • Natural gas piping
  • Installing and servicing drains, fixtures, valves, and faucets
  • Servicing water closets
  • Pumps
  • Backflow preventers
  • Plumbing codes
  • Blueprints and isometric drawings
  • Tests and inspections

Career Options

Program graduates go on to work in a variety of careers including pipe layers, pipe fitters, steamfitters, and plumbers.


Before entering the program, students must:

  • Complete either Job Corps’ basic Facilities Maintenance or Plumbing career technical training program.
  • Be at least 19 years old at the completion of the program.
  • Meet basic academic requirements in math and reading.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Have a positive attendance and progress record.
  • Have a clean criminal record.
  • Have a clean driving record.
  • Have a clean credit report.
  • Have health clearance from the Job Corps center where they received basic training.
  • Complete a successful phone, in-person, or videoconference interview.
